The brackets in the second column show the number of gorillas in each gorilla family, as at October 2009. The adults are normally much fewer than the juveniles, sub-adults, blackbucks and babies.
Number of tourists allowed to visit each family
If a gorilla family has 10 individuals or more, 6 tourists are allowed to visit.
If a gorilla family has less than 10 individuals 4 visitors are allowed to visit the group.
It may be a requirement for all visitors – tourists, guides and rangers – to wear a mask to protect the gorillas from our diseases and germs.
So at the moment between 28-32 tourists are welcome PER DAY.
The Mapuwa, Kabirizi and Humba families can have 6 visitors each day, for a duration of one hour, and the Lulengo, Rugendo and Munyaga families can have 4 visitors each day, for a duration of one hour.

To Top
These are mountain gorillas, staying in high up in the mounatins of Bwindi, up to 4000metres ASL. Therefore to track them one may traverse dense growth in this impenetrable forest, through swamps and wet undergrowth, and climb cliffs and high areas in search of them. Tracking can take as little as one hour up to as many as 8 hours when one returns to base camp. But the tracking is made easy by the rangers who would have known prior to your tracking, where the gorillas are. For environmental reasons, you are allowed a maximum of one hour with the gorillas.
