An Introduction to Trekking in Uganda
Trekking in Uganda is a wonderful experience. In the Rwenzori in addition to the 'Central Circuit Trail' visitors can with prior arrangement make a assent of the major peak/s, on Mount Elgon, and the on the volcanoes of the Virunga chain that make up Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and PNV in Rwanda there are fixed trails where you will be guided throughout by a Ranger Guide.
The Rwenzoris, or the “Mountains of the Moon”, have a legendary beauty. Shrouded almost perpetually in mist, they have a seducing, quality that has led to many visits from discerning travelers. The mountains - about 120 km long have six peaks with permanent snow, three with glaciers. This is a beauty in itself as early explorers were astounded to find snow on any land feature, at the equator! The highest mountain in the range, Mount Stanley, with its peak, Margherita, the third highest in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, rises to 5,109m above sea level.
Mount Elgon came into existence as a result of a volcanic eruption. For hundreds of years, the mountain has never erupted since its formation. With its highest peak, ‘Wagagai’, at 4,321m high, Mount Elgon’s major features are: plethora of waterfalls, hot springs and the extraordinary caldera, which is about 8 kilometers in diameter.
In addition to trekking in the Rwenzori and Mount Elgon consider time spent on the Virunga trekking on what must be some of the most chanlleging and rewarding days treks to be enjoyed on the continent. Trek your way through thick jungle on any of the dormant volcanoes of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The active volcano Mount Nyiragongo towering over the town of Goma in the DR Congo can also be visited by tourists. For details of our programmes in the Virunga plaese contact us.
